Product Description David Bowie performs live. Genre: Music Video - Pop/Rock Rating: NR Release Date: 21-MAR-2006 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com When David Bowie released Let's Dance in 1983, there were fans who felt Ziggy Stardust had sold out, but it was--of course--just another in a long line of stage personae for the Thin White Duke. Unfortunately, it wasn't his most interesting. This video, from the Vancouver stop on the Serious Moonlight tour, seems a little dull. Aside from a prop or two, some nifty costumes for his band (inspired by a Singapore street scene), and singing one song inside a tube of plastic, there's little of the visual imagination seen from Bowie in the past. On the other hand, the band is tight (although Earl Slick's I'm-a-guitar-god moves grow tiresome), the lighting is cool, and Bowie pulls out material from throughout his career (there are only three songs from his then-latest album Let's Dance). Best of all, he seems to be having fun, and without all the makeup and outrageousness, David Bowie the person comes through more. Maybe it's just another stage persona, but he seems like a pretty nice bloke. --Geof Miller

GREAT SETLIST! April 1, 2010 T-Town Punk (T-Town) I am very glad this concert is available as it is a great document to David Bowie at possibly the peek of his popularity. A huge star at this point and playing the artist in giant size stadiums that were hardly the proper venue for much of his adventurous music. Still Bowie and band pull off a great show and fans of his early to mid career will be happy as he plays songs off of every record released except I don't think he performed anything from his debut or Ziggy Stardust. At least one song off every other recording makes this a pleasing and well performed concert. Heroes, Cracked Actor, Golden years, Life On Mars, Young Americans, Rebel Rebel, Space Oddity... and on and on. Nice setlist! The band plays great, but their dynamism is sometimes diminished by a so so recording mix, but it's not as awful as some other reviewers are saying. Good stuff.
Glad I own it in spite of the sound & video quality February 6, 2010 S. Hawkins I read other user reviews before I bought this, so I knew what I was buying. And I agree with those who say the sound quality misses the mark. It is a bit muddy and the separation isn't good. Similarly, the video doesn't hold up to today's digital standards. This is a concert that just didn't transfer well to DVD. BUT...this concert is a GREAT selection from a FANTASTIC body of work by a CHARISMATIC performer! In spite of its imperfect sound and video quality, I'm glad I own it so I can watch David Bowie's performance.
Serious Moonlight, Poor Quality DVD November 13, 2009 Billy Pilgrim (Hamilton, MO USA) I had watched this David Bowie concert years ago when it premiered on HBO. The quality of the music and the video were superb. I was so excited to find the DVD of this same concert that I purchased it and anticipated reliving this wonderful show. Nothing could be further from the truth on this transfer to DVD. I'm surprised that David Bowie or HBO would allow such a poor quality DVD be released. It's a shame, because the concert performance is excellent, but the sound on this DVD is muddy and the video is blurred. I had purchased a used copy from the one of the Amazon sellers. The DVD actually froze up on me prior to the end of the DVD. I was so upset by then that I just threw it away. To their credit, the sellers have refunded my money anyway, although I do not now have the DVD to return. 5 stars to the used DVD seller, and one star to Amazon for selling such a cheap ripoff as this DVD.
This Still Holds Up Gold!! April 7, 2009 C. Malone (AL) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I first watched the Seious Moonlight concert on HBO, when it was also simulcast on FM radio, and it absolutely blew me away! I still have my video tape, and my cassette that I recorded, & had been waiting for weeks to see this and to record it. I think that this was really when David Bowie was at his very best, a complete blend of all of his previous selves, and his voice was as great as it was when he sang Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby. I pretty much wore out my video tape and cassette over the years. When I finally saw that it had been released on DVD, I was afraid that it would not hold up to the experience from so long ago, and that I had not watched or listened to for a number of years. I am sooooo happy that I was terribly wrong, and that I really think that this is the quintessential Bowie. It has high points, & low points, but so does every other concert. I just know that Serious Moonlight continues to stand up with time, & I think that it always will. WATCH IT!!!
What a great visual documentary of this show... March 22, 2009 Gary Robert Graham (Lone Pine CA) I saw this show back in 1983 twice. This DVD brought back the rush of seeing David Bowie live (he's always a rush!) and its captured so wonderfully on this DVD. A must for any fan of David Bowie or live rock performances in general.
